I grew up in Oregon. If that doesn't mean anything to you, let me paint you a picture. Summers were spent naked at a lake. Or naked at a river. Or naked at someone's pool. Sleepovers were playing tarot cards and eating dairy-free ice cream. We were hippies and the children of hippies, and we liked Nirvana and hiking, and not a single girl that I went to High School with wore makeup, except maybe at Prom.
This is all to help illustrate that I fundamentally gravitate toward natural, organic, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly(er) products and routines. For years, I just bought "natural" products. Avalon Organics for shampoo and conditioner, Seventh Generation laundry soap, EO cleaning supplies, etc. I felt pretty good about this, but I hated all the plastic and the waste. And the expense! That shit is expensive!
The way I started to learn about #DIY home cleaning was from my husband. He loves vinegar. Oh, and bleach. I grew up terrified of bleach- my parents would talk about it like it was plutonium. My husband, however, loves to use vinegar, baking soda, bleach, and other household products to clean. So, inspired by him, I started dabbling in the DIY world.
The blog was, initially, a way for me to organize and track recipes and ideas as I learned more. I work full-time and we have a young baby, so my time commitment is minimal, and while I want to make my own products so that I can avoid chemicals and waste, it has to be easy and quick to do so. And, honestly, it is easier and faster than purchasing products (not to mention cheaper and more sustainable)!
I realized that there must be lots of other people like me who would appreciate this info, so I have made this public and hope that it inspires others. Please let me know how your DIY natural living is going for you! I love to hear feedback, improvements on recipes, and success stories. Thanks for reading and sharing!
